'How to'

I learnt my knot tying skills serving in the Royal Navy creating Bells Ropes, Knot Boards, decorative place mats and repairing and splicing ropes of all sizes.

Since retiring, I have developed a new skillset with Paracord. Here I will show you how I create the twisted weave design as featured in the majority of my designs.

How to weave a twisted length

I am going to use 5 lengths of 550 Type III paracord. You can change , add, or remove them as you like to increase or decreases the size of the twist, its width and thickness.

Lay the 5 strands out as indicated.

4x top to bottom and 1x left to right over the 4.

Top left strand, down, over your finger, to the left side of its bottom end.

Support the bottom strands with your thumb.

Take each top strand and place to the left of its bottom end as shown

Take Left strand over and across the four strands.

The top strands are now held.

Take bottom strand up and to the Right side of its upper end, (between first and second upper strands), and tight to your finger.

Upper strands are forming loops over your finger.

Take remainder three bottom strands, up and to the right of their upper ends, tight to your finger.

Take Right hand strand through the four loops to the Left.

Upper strands are the loops, lower strands are tight to your finger.

Carefully pull each strand to tighten the weave.

Tighten thus creating one knot of 10 strands, approx 7mm high.

Repeat the steps by taking top strand in turn, and placing to the left of their corresponding bottom strand.

This will create the twist.

The tighter the final layer, the stiffer the weave.

Using the color combination demonstrated, a thick weave, white 3x stranded spiral with a red and yellow spine between the spirals.
